When the employees at a small nonprofit at 9430 Research Blvd. backed up their data, they did everything they were supposed to. Except one thing.
“In hindsight, we didn’t think about storing it off-site,” said John Barrett, Jr., president of the Scientific Investigation & Instruction Institute, also called Si3.
When a small plane plowed into their building Feb. 18, Barrett — who was working in San Antonio at the time — first thought about the people.

In the latest news, Google has launched a self-sustaining, publicly driven person finder application for the most reason natural disasters occurring in Haiti, Chile, and throughout the world. Somewhat reactive, it is a great easy-to-use too that gives users a chance to find someone based upon first/last name or update information about someone listed or involved in the disaster. Google disclaims that they’re not checking the veracity of data submitted: this is simply a public, searchable notice board to enable the friends and family of victims, and those on the ground in Chile, to communicate quickly and easily. The great thing is that people are using it to find out information on lost loved-ones in Chile’s most recent 8.3 earthquake.
But the real question I pose is why not be proactive about communicating your well-being and/or whereabouts in times of emergency or disaster? In addition, keep in mind that services such as Google’s person finder are really reactive measures in communicating the well-being and whereabouts of friends and family in times of emergency and disaster. But wouldn’t you like to be proactive and have a way to communicate over several different platforms? You can when you sign up for a WeAreSafeAndSound.com account. Use both services: Google to find, and use our service to mass communicate and find friends and family. Learn about the services here in a short video.

For many, the idea of preparedness seems like an impossible undertaking. The amount of equipment and supplies needed is staggering. When I first came to the realization that I was under prepared, the gap between what I had and where I needed to be was too much for my public servant’s paycheck to bear.
I would spend a lot of time discussing preparedness with a group that I would go shooting with, and all of these meetings would always gravitate to “which weapon do you plan for X meters?” or “how many rounds do you think I need for X weapon?” I love to talk guns, but if we were discussing preparedness as a whole, we were leaving out lots of basic needs!
It seemed that the plan was to square one area of preparedness away before moving on to the next. I asked myself “what happens if I have to leave tomorrow?” I realized that having a little bit of everything to survive was better than having a pallet of ammo, but no food or water. This is where I decided that being honest about what I actually set aside for emergencies and developing a starting point was the best plan.

It is always difficult to criticize as an armchair quarterback but the only way others learn sometimes is by example.
This story on Fox News 2-18-10 about a fellow named Jason Pede on a business trip stranded 73 hours on a snowpacked Colorado road because of a wrong turn or bad directions is a good example. We are relieved he made it out alive....let us use his example to help others.
